Yusuf Sheikh leads the Essex junior charge at Ipswich Silver

YUSUF SHEIKH lived up to his number one seeding at last weekend’s Silver event at Ipswich marching to the winners’ trophy without dropping a single game.
The Essex junior, who is coached by Dave Webster at the Connaught Club in Chingford, opened his account with a comfortable, quick-fire 3-0 win over club-mate Palmer Deville and continued in that fashion defeating Joe Pannel (Hants), Alex Banhidai (Essex), Alexander Broadbridge (Hants) and Yorkshire’s Alec Tomlinson to claim the title.
Alice Green came within an ace of claiming the girls’ Under-19 crown narrowly missing out on claiming the prized scalp of home favourite and number one seed, Lucy Turmel. The two England team-mates traded point for point throughout a gripping final that eventually went in Lucy’s favour 11-7 in the fifth.
Aaron Allpress (Under-19) and Ollie Green (Under-17) both finished in fifth spot in their respective age groups and there were other notable Essex performances from Ellie Hewes (5th U-17); Eleonor White (7th U17) and Aliza Sheikh (7th U15).
Emma Bartley, who trains with the Off The Wall Squash Academy in Colchester, won the Girls’ Under-15 title representing her home county Suffolk.
